The Soundtrack for Fargo Season 4 Is a Perfect Match

By | October 12, 2020
  • Season 4 of FX’s smash anthology series Fargo, based loosely on Joel and Ethan Coen’s 1996 classic film of the same name, is primarily centered on a 1950 battle between crime syndicates.
  • Given that setting, the season is full of era-appropriate music, featuring some classic jazz from Duke Ellington and others.
  • We’ll track every song here as Season 4 progresses, week in and week out.

Season 4 of Fargo is trying something different from what any Fargo has done before. That includes either of the first three seasons from showrunner Noah Hawley (who not only helms FX’s Fargo world, but also was behind the superb and trippy superhero drama Legion), and the original 1996 Fargo film from Joel and Ethan Coen. Season 4 of Fargo is going back in time—all the way to 1950—to tell a story of battling crime syndicates. And that means everything has to go back to 1950. The storefronts. The cars. The clothing. And, perhaps most importantly when setting the mood, the music.

So while Fargos of past may have leaned heavily on rock, or that epic sweeping movie theme, Season 4, like some of us at a certain point, gets into jazz. It also gets into, generally, songs you probably feel like you’ve heard before, but will likely have trouble naming or placing. We’ve got you covered there.

And that’s not to say its all jazz and golden oldies; composer Jeff Russo, who also worked on The Umbrella Academy, Star Trek: Picard, and more, returns for his own fourth go-around with the Fargo franchise. His original music will play throughout the season, within the episodes, and especially as the credits roll. Because you know it only really feels like Fargo when that sweeping theme kicks in and you’re trying to make sense of all the quirky, midwestern bloodshed you’ve just witnessed. As Frances McDormand said in the 1996 movie, “Oh, you betcha.”
