Zovirax is used as part of the management program for certain infections in people who also have the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV is the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Zovirax does not cure AIDS or get rid of the HIV virus from your body, but it may prevent further damage to the immune system by stopping production of herpes viruses.
Mechanism of action:
Acyclovir (the active ingredient in Zovirax) belongs to a group of medicines called “antiviral”.
It works by stopping the production of the viruses that cause herpes and shingles.
Your doctor may, however, have prescribed Zovirax for a different use to that described above.
Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions, and sometimes a medicine may only be used if extra care is taken. For these reasons, before you start taking acyclovir it is important that your doctor knows:If you are pregnant, trying for a baby, or breast-feeding.If you have any problems with the way your kidneys work.If you are taking or using any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, such as herbal and complementary medicines. If you have ever had an allergic reaction to a medicine.Dosage:
Your dose will depend upon the type of your infection, so take acyclovir exactly as your doctor tells you to. Typically, doses range from 200 mg-800 mg, taken 2-5 times daily. Your doctor or pharmacist will tell you what dose is right for you, and this information will be printed on the label of the pack to remind you.Space your doses out evenly during the day. You can take acyclovir before or after food.Even if you feel your infection has cleared up, keep taking this medicine until the course is finished, unless you are told to stop. This is to prevent the infection from coming back. A course of treatment usually lasts for around 5-10 days. If you still feel unwell after finishing the course, go back to see your doctor. If you forget to take a dose, take one as soon as you remember. Try to take the correct number of doses each day, but do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.If you have been prescribed a brand of tablet called Zovirax, these tablets are dispersible and can be stirred into a small glass of water to make them easier to swallow. You can, however, swallow them as normal if you prefer.Storage:
Store at room temperature. Protect from heat, light and moisture. Keep away from reach of children.
