Osher’s cheap and simple diet and fitness plan

By | August 29, 2020

You might think that after almost 30 years at the very top of Aussie TV and radio, Osher Günsberg’s diet and fitness regime would be totally out of touch with us regular people. We’re talking Oprah-style private chefs, exclusive gyms, personal trainers, and all the rest, right?

But the reality couldn’t be more Down to Earth. In fact, Osher’s favourite workout equipment requires little more than $ 30 and a trip to Bunnings. And it doesn’t get more relatable than that.

Yep, whenever Osher finds himself on the road — and as host of The Bachelor Australia on Channel 10, he’s travelling more than most — his very first stop is to the local hardware store to buy a bag of sand.

“I have these sand weight bags which I travel with which are really great,” he tells Health Hacker.

“They fit in your bag in your luggage, so they’re really small, but I can get one of them up to around 60kg, and the other up to 40kg, with just $ 30 worth of sand from Bunnings.

“It means I can have some pretty serious weight to lift wherever I am. They are game changers.”

Okay, so expensive gym equipment is out. But what about diet? Nutritionally perfect food delivered daily, perhaps? A personal chef that lives in his guest quarters?

Wrong again, I’m afraid. In fact, Osher says you’ll find him batch-cooking homemade meals on a Sunday, with a week full of reheated healthy meals to follow.

“I try to prepare as many meals as I can,” he says.

“If that means making a big batch and throwing it all in the fridge, then that’s perfect.

“I’ll make enough for two days at a time and I will eat the same thing. That way, you know you are eating well and you have good food waiting for you, no matter what you are doing.

“Our bodies are the same as any other mathematical equation, both sides have to balance — you put good stuff in, then on the other side of the equation you will get good stuff out.”

As host of The Bachelor Australia, The Bachelorette Australia, Bachelor in Paradise and The Masked Singer, Osher has seen his fair share of happiness, and no shortage of heartbreak, either.

So when we caught up this week I asked him what he’s learned from his front-row seat to this tsunami of emotions.

“There’s no real secret to happiness,” he says.

“I understand that happiness is as fleeting as the sun coming out from behind a cloud on a cold winter’s day, it’s out for a while and then it’s gone.

“The price of happiness is that we experience sadness, the price of joy is that we experience fear, the price of love is that we will experience heartbreak — you can’t have one without another.

“The more that you resist the emotions that aren’t happiness, the worse they become. Accept them, understand they will pass over you like a big wave, and then you come up for air and you will be okay again.”

FAST FIVE WITH OSHER GÜNSBERG

1. What’s you secret for staying fit?

Just do it every day. Do what you can every day, and understand that what works for some rich person on Instagram might not work for you. Just do what you can.

2. What’s your favourite food?

My wife is a much better cook than I am, so anything she makes I will be grateful to eat.

3. What’s your favourite treat food?

My wife’s vegan, gluten-free eggplant parmigiana.

4. What’s the secret to success?

Do it because you love it, do it so much you become the best at it. When it becomes time for someone to pay you to do it, you will become the only obvious choice because you will be undeniable.
