In case you haven’t been keeping close tabs on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s whereabouts, here’s an update: The couple has been keeping a relatively low profile since their interview with Oprah, but now that royal fam tensions have *somewhat* thawed, Harry made his first public appearance at Global Citizen’s star-studded Vax Live: The Concert to Reunite the World—a live show to increase COVID-19 vaccination awareness and donations—this past weekend. Meghan, on the other hand, was notably absent despite her and Harry being cochairs for the event.
Sooo…why did Meghan skip the concert? Well, it’s pretty likely Meghan didn’t attend the Global Citizen concert for the same reason she couldn’t attend Prince Philip’s funeral last month—she’s currently pregnant with her and Harry’s second child, and at the time, it was “recommended she rest in the final months.” It’s also worth mentioning that there were a bunch of celebrities at this event, like President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Jennifer Lopez, and Selena Gomez, which could increase Meghan’s chances of contracting COVID-19 even though people have been vaccinated.
FWIW, Harry made an impassioned speech during the ceremony about global vaccine equity and said:
“We’re also coming together because this pandemic cannot end unless we act collectively with an unprecedented commitment to our shared humanity. The vaccine must be distributed to everyone everywhere. We cannot rest or truly recover until there is fair distribution to every corner of the world. The mission in front of us is one we cannot afford to fail out and that’s what tonight is about. The virus does not respect borders and access to the vaccine cannot be determined by geography. It must be accepted as a basic right for all and that is our starting point.
“None of us should be comfortable thinking that we could be fine when so many others are suffering. In reality, and especially with this pandemic, when any suffer, we all suffer. We must look beyond ourselves with empathy and compassion for those we know and those we don’t. We need to lift up all of humanity and make sure that no person or community is left behind. What we do in this moment will stand in history, and tonight, we stand in solidarity with the millions of families across India who are battling a devastating second wave.”
It sucks that Meghan wasn’t able to attend in person, but she will be involved in a pretaped segment that will air during the broadcast on May 8. Can’t wait!
