Wait, Did Ziggy Really Choke Amabella During the First Season of ‘Big Little Lies’?

By | June 10, 2019

Big Little Lies is officially back, which means the women of Monterey are about to put you through it just like they did last season. Before you dive into the first episode, there are some things that need to be discussed.

Mainly, what started this whole mess in the first place? At the orientation at Otter Bay before the school year started, Jane’s son Ziggy was accused of choking Renata’s daughter Amabella. That had a domino effect of parents taking sides, which created a huge B plot of drama for the entire season. He was later accused of biting her, too. But… did Ziggy even choke or bite Amabella?

Some facts

No one at the school saw Ziggy attempt to choke Amabella. The only reason he was accused of was because Amabella pointed at him when the adults asked her who did. He was the new kid at school, so that could be the reason Amabella singled him out. Kids are kids, obviously.

It became pretty apparent early on in the season that he wasn’t a violent kid, but Renata was convinced it was him, which resulted in kids being told they shouldn’t play with Ziggy. Basically, Ziggy was bullied and isolated for a crime no one knew for sure he even committed.

So… what’s the truth?

The situation got super out of hand when Renata literally circulated a petition to get Ziggy kicked out of Otter Bay. So in the finale, Ziggy revealed to his mom that he wasn’t the one who’d been hurting Amabella this entire time. It was actually one of Celeste’s twins, Max. You can watch the scene here in case you need a quick reminder.

How’d Jane handle it?

So, she had to tell Celeste that her kid was the one hurting Amabella, which is awkward, but it’s better than Jane telling Renata, right?

In the scene, Jane tries to defend the kids, saying “They bully, it’s human nature. They grow out of it.” Celeste responded, in a nod to her own abusive relationship with her husband, “Sometimes, they don’t.”
