  • Sofia Vergara is defending a controversial clip of a series of interviews from The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
  • In the clip, Ellen is poking fun at Sofia’s accent.

Sofia Vergara does not want to be dragged into Ellen DeGeneres’ controversy. Ever since the news broke that The Ellen DeGeneres Show is facing sexual misconduct and “toxic work environment” allegations, people have been speaking out about their experiences on the daytime talk show. Since Ellen is now under scrutiny, clips from her past are beginning to resurface. One in particular includes interviews with Sofia.

In the above clip, Ellen is clearly mocking Sofia’s accent and her ability to speak English. “I mean literally, you’ve been on this show [Modern Family] for 10 years and your accent has gotten worse. How is that possible?” she asked in one interview. In another, she said, “Your English has gotten better, I have to say.” Sofia played it off and responded, “Her English?” while pointing to fellow guest, Reese Witherspoon.

These clips don’t exactly make Ellen look good, but Sofia explained that Ellen wasn’t being offensive. “Two comedians having fun with each other to entertain. I was never a victim guys, I was always in on the joke,” she tweeted while also sharing a clip from a different interview.

Regardless of the comments, the show is still facing an investigation and Ellen’s job might be in jeopardy. Variety reported that executive producer Ed Glavin is expected to exit his role, and Warner Bros. released a statement saying there will be staffing changes:

“We have identified several staffing changes, along with appropriate measures to address the issues that have been raised, and are taking the first steps to implement them. Warner Bros. and Ellen DeGeneres are all committed to ensuring a workplace based on respect and inclusion. We are confident this course of action will lead us to the right way forward for the show.”
