The Pineapple Diet: A Fad Diet

By | October 1, 2016

The Metzger pineapple diet (also known as the pineapple diet, pineapple detox diet, or the pineapple and tuna diet) is a popular supplemental diet that was started by Joann Metzger. The pineapple diet is not widely accepted as a healthy main stream eating plan, and is in fact a very controversial diet that is often grouped together with other negative calorie diets (pineapple appears on the negative calorie list), as well as with fad diets.

The grouping of the pineapple diet as a fad diet does have some validity. While some people have claimed success with this diet, critics have often argued that this particular fad diet is just a thinly veiled starvation diet. This claim is generally true of any diet that only allows dieters to eat one or two foods over any amount of time.

While there are may different forms of the pineapple diet, the original one created by Metzger was meant as a three day crash diet, and not as a full time eating plan.

The “new” versions of the pineapple diet can be confusing for individuals who aren’t familiar with it, and even without those potential disagreements and problems, there is still an on going argument over whether you have to have fresh pineapple or if canned pineapple works, and what the actual eating plans are.

In the three day version of this diet there are three distinctive stages. You eat nothing but one entire fresh pineapple the first day (and drink a lot of water). On day two you do the same thing but also eat two cans of tuna for protein. On day three you do the same as day one: just pineapple and lots of water.

The theory is between the no fat, only natural fruit carbs, high fiber, and special enzymes that a dieter should lose 5 lbs or more in this short time. Then for a week or two eat more normally, but responsibly, and then repeat.

There are many other versions of this diet, some that include pineapple at every meal, pineapple as a snack three times a day (but still a normal three meals), and there are also versions of this diet that involve taking pineapple diet pills three times a day.

There are many claims about pineapple and pineapple diets that haven’t been figured out yet, and there is a lot of criticism that the pineapple diet has no scientific basis and is just a poorly disguised starvation fad diet.

For summary, some of the pluses of the pineapple diet are:
1) Many claims of good weight loss numbers
2) Pineapple is delicious and very healthy to eat
3) The large amount of water to drink can help flush the system.

Downsides of the pineapple diet:
1) Not scientifically proven – no actual scientific studies of the pineapple diet have actually been done.
2) Can be classified as a starvation diet, and therefore could be bad for your health.
3) Pineapple is very high in sugar.

The jury is stil out on this weight loss plan, but the pineapple diet is a fad diet that seems likely to be around for a while.
